NFIA is a Non Profit Organization

National Federation of Indian American Associations (NFIA), established in 1980, aims to unify the diverse Indian American community by coordinating and promoting the activities of its member associations. Highlight of its activities over the past many years:

1. NFIA has been in the forefront of activities in US-India relations for over two decades, organizing Congressional lunches, White House briefings, lobbying on better US-India relationship and has prepared position papers on this relationship for US Congress and Senate. 

2. NFIA organized the first Conference on building economic bridges between US & India in New Delhi (2003) to bring about better relations between US-India. It also organized the first 'US-India Science & Technology Conference (2002), which was inaugurated by Deputy Secretary Samuel W. Bodman, Department of Commerce and Ambassador of India Lalit Mansingh.

3. NFIA organized the 90th Anniversary of the Gadar Movement for freedom of India (2003).

4. NFIA has excelled in leadership roles in the US and provided exemplary service for causes relating to various educational, humanitarian and natural calamities in India.

5. NFIA organized the first sub-conferences of Medical professionals (1984), for Hospitality Industry and Technology (1986). NFIA has been a catalyst (through its various sub-conferences) for the birth of professional organizations such as AAHOA and AAPI and TiE. NFIA was instrumental in the formation of the Global Organization of People of Indian Origin (GOPIO) at the NFIA sponsored First Global Convention of People of Indian Origin in New York (1989). The weeklong convention attracted over 3000 delegates from 26 countries.

6. NFIA has led in various foreign policy issues, Immigration reform bills, US Census count, voter registration drive, and is a recipient of many national awards. 

7. NFIA pioneered the national spelling bee contest jointly with North South Foundation (1992-1993).

8. NFIA sponsored the national essay contest (1998-1999) and have held many youth & family conferences. It has also co-sponsored many national beauty pageants (1996, 1997).

9. NFIA has successfully countered various hate crime incidents, anti-Hindu sentiments, etc.

10. NFIA has aggressively campaigned for charitable causes. NFIA-AT&T- BSS High School in Latur Maharashtra (Earthquake), $100,000 to Andhra Pradesh Cyclone fund through Coca Cola India, $25,000 (1994-1995), to Kargil Fund, $10,000 (1999) to Scholarship fund for Kashmiri refugee students (1998), Flood relief funds in Georgia (1995), Oklahoma Bombing relief fund, Project Seva effort for recent Gujarat Earthquake (2001) and earlier contributions during California earthquake, donations to Children, Blind Women, etc.

11. NFIA organized the only national official Banquet to celebrate India's 50th Independence Day Anniversary (1997) in DC, which featured First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton.

12. NFIA facilitated the publication of the official book "India Unveiled" for the 50th Anniversary Independence Day celebrations overseas in the USA. The book has received many national awards (1997).

13. NFIA’s leaders have been recognized nationally. Activists and officers like Niraj Baxi, Rajen Anand, Parthasarthy Pillai, Haresh Panchal, Subash Razdan, Inder Singh, Thomas Abraham, Ashok Bhatt, Indravadan Shah and Nirmal Sinha have been appointed to various State Commissions and Committees.

14. NFIA made history when it facilitated the first life-size bronze statue of Mahatma Gandhi on federal land at the National Historic Site in Atlanta on January 24, 1998. The second statue on federal land was inaugurated in Washington, DC.

15. NFIA has a very popular, voluntary, e-newsletter/bulletin board NFIA@yahoogroups.com which has been communicating globally since 1999

16. Recently, NFIA re-launched its website www.nfia.net.

17. Subash Razdan, the past president of NFIA and Nirmal Sinha, its past member of the Board were recently honored with the prestigious Ellis Island Award, joining the list of past recipients such as former US president Jimmy Carter, Henry Kissinger and Collin Powell.

18. NFIA served as a catalyst for the birth of the Gandhi Foundation (GF) of USA headquartered in Atlanta, GA and the installation of the first Gandhi Statue on a Federal Land.
